Our Story
2019
After moving to a new city, experiencing a lot of loss, and deep-diving into self-reflection I began to seriously consider what legacy meant to me, what I wanted to pass down to my children, and the childhood I wanted to create for them. When I think of my mother I always picture her in our kitchen, preparing wholesome meals for our family of seven. Her ability to transform ingredients was/is nostalgic and inspiring. Bread making felt like a way I too could transform something as simple as flour and water, while creating a starter to pass down, generation to generation.
And so, my journey began.
2020
Almost a year into baking the pandemic hit and I tried to support my community with my love language: bread. There was a bread shortage and I had a 50 lb bag of flour, an active starter, and plenty of time. I offered loaves to my community and quickly had orders flowing in. I spent my days delivering loaves to families in Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Manhattan.
If I traced back to the origin of Burleith Bread and Bakery I would find it in those early deliveries. I was captivated by sourdough and how it could be used to serve and uplift my community.
2021-2023
I moved back to DC, married an incredible man, and in 2023 we grew our family by one. Throughout it all I was baking for my family, and without realizing it honing my skills as a baker and developing the recipes that are now part of the Burleith Bread & Bakery menu.
2024
For me, sourdough baking was born of a desire to care for my family and seeing that in action has been everything I hoped it would be. This microbakery is a way for me to extend that care and nourish my community.
When you support Burleith Bread & Bakery you are supporting a family. Thank you for ordering, sharing, and being here. You are appreciated.
